Praised for his warm, lyrical sound, Malcolm Aiken’s music traverses the rich textures of jazz, latin and pop. He finds inspiration from many of the trumpet greats, drawing upon the playful exuberance of Freddie Hubbard, the velvet tone of Chet Baker, and the haunting cool-jazz ruminations of Miles Davis.

Based in Vancouver, Malcolm is an active performer across the pacific northwest and since 2006, has been featured annually at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, the Vancouver International Salsa Festival, the Sun Peaks Music Festival, and the Whistler Music Festival.

He has shared the stage with artists like Chucho Valdez, Patrick Watson and Jimmy Bosch, performed for international audiences at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games, and for world figures including the Dalai Lama, Reverend Desmond Tutu and Shirin Ebadi.

In addition to performances with his own group, the MAQ, Malcolm is the leader of latin jazz sextet Mazacote and Afro-electro band Tanga. He is a soloist with orchestras, jazz big bands and experimental music projects, and has performed internationally in concerts in the United States, Europe and Asia. Malcolm is also co-founder of TrebleFive Records, a boutique jazz and world music label.

Malcolm is an in-demand music educator, with faculty positions at the annual Whistler Music Festival and Sun Peaks Music Festival. He holds a Masters degree in ethnomusicology from the University of British Columbia and has taught clinics and master classes to students in Canada and Asia.
